Alan has been a popular speaker for many years, with his own light-hearted style and wonderful anecdotes appealing to gardeners and non-gardeners alike.
As he was introduced as their speaker to a Ladies Luncheon Club recently, it was pointed out to everyone present that each of them had in front of them a form to fill out. Having previously made notes, they were now being asked to judge their speakers for the previous season. "And now I'd like to introduce our speaker for today Alan Mason” – (no pressure then!). 

The next day, Alan received the following by email:
“Dear Ellen (that's an in-joke which you will only understand once you've heard this particular talk!!). I would like to say how much we enjoyed your talk on Wednesday. And to let you know that you were voted Numero Uno by a country mile!

There seemed to be a small fan club forming who were talking of coming on one of your Noble Caledonia Garden tours. A lovely holiday and what a super way to see beautiful gardens. With thanks and best wishes”
